We're "away" on our annual virtual vacation to France, the Tour de France. If anything, this year's Tour has been even more marred by doping than last year's. Three riders have been dismissed, including the young Italian Ricardo Ricco, winner of two stages. Yet there doesn't seem to be the uproar this year that there was last year.
When Ricco bolted away from the leading pack on that grueling mountain climb a few days ago, my wife looked at me and said, "He's dirty." It wasn't quite as dramatic as Floyd Landis' solo breakaway that won him the Tour in 2006, but it was a strong attack, and like Landis' attack, performance enhanced.
Maybe the Tour officials should just hire my wife to do all the drug testing, since her "I call B.S." screening approach seems to work pretty well!
In a strange way, last year's uproar actually increased my interest in the race. But the slow drip of cheaters this year has left me feeling deflated. Ricco's two stage wins accounted for much of the first week's surprising results. Now, looking back, it's a lot less interesting.
Still, there's the castles, the vineyards, and crazy guys wearing mankinis and Basque flags running alongside the racers. And what else is there to watch in July? BASEBALL? Gimme a break...
And if you don't have a mankini and a Basque flag, why a Spanish flag and black socks will do just fine:
